Paweł Lechowski

Paweł Lechowski

Paweł Lechowski graduated from Jagiellonian University in Krakow, specializing in ethnology with focus on Roma issues. Since 1960s he has been actively researching (mainly Polish) Roma and was involved in the organization of several museum exhibitions on the Roma in the Museum in Tarnow. He also managed to collect several artifacts connected with the Roma as a part of his own private collection, especially interested in Roma artisan works. The collection became well known among Polish Roma scholars. In 1990s – as a translator from the Romani –  Paweł Lechowski started to cooperate with Roma immigrants from Romania who found their way to Poland at that time. His knowledge of Roma issues was by then acknowledged by other scholars (in the form of extensive collaborations, among others with the late Hungarian ethnomusicologist Katalin Kovalcsik specializing in the Roma music), while  Paweł began to serve often as an expert on Polish TV or at the court, both as translator and  mediator. Additionally Paweł has worked for several academic and civic projects aimed at approximating the understanding the Roma communities, and he became involved in producing documentary films on Polish Roma, etc. propagating the Romany culture in Poland. On top of that, he is also an author of a few publications, some of them co-authored with well-known scholars (Ewa Kocój or Sławomir Kapralski).
